Packaged foods can often be high in salt, fat and sugar where excessive consumption can lead to development of chronic diseases. Foodswitch is an app created by The George Institute to see what’s in the food you’re eating and make better food choices when grocery shopping.

With the Foodswitch app, users scan a product to view traffic light-style colour-coded ratings for four key food components (total fat, saturated fat, sugar and salt). Better nutritional alternatives for comparable products are also provided. This database of nutritional information is continuously updated using crowd sourcing methodologies.

Recently, Foodswitch has been nominated for “Most Valuable HCP or Health Care Initiative Award” at the upcoming eyeforpharma conference in Barcelona. This conference, held between 18th to 20th of March, targets sales and marketing executives from pharmaceutical organizations. Other nominations in this category are ASD Healthcare, Boehringer Ingelheim, Eli Lilly, Sanofi, and Angelini. The George Institute is the only nominee who does not market pharmaceutical products.
